1. About These Terms
These terms apply to all surfboard, wetsuit and equipment rentals from KYO Surf & Youth Hostel, run by Champsaur Sicilia S.L., Calle Bolivia 11, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (“we”, “us”). “You” means the person renting the equipment. “Equipment” means everything you rent from us, including boards, wetsuits, leashes and fins.
By ticking the box on our booking form, or by accepting these terms at reception, you confirm that you have read, understood and agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't rent from us.
These terms cover equipment rentals only. Surf classes have their own conditions, which we explain when you book a class.
2. Who Can Rent
To keep everyone safe, you can only rent from us if all of the following are true:
- You are 18 or older. Renters under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to accept these terms for them (see section 11).
- You are a confident swimmer and can swim in open water and waves without help.
- You are in good health and have no medical condition that makes surfing unsafe for you, such as heart problems, epilepsy, recent injuries or pregnancy. If you are unsure, ask your doctor before you surf.
- You are not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication that affects your judgement or physical ability.
- You can show a valid photo ID or passport when you pick up the equipment.
Our staff may refuse a rental if they believe any of these points are not met, or that it would be unsafe for you to surf. This is for your safety and the safety of others.
3. Booking and Payment
- Booking requests. Sending the form on our website is a request, not a confirmed booking. We will confirm by email or WhatsApp, depending on availability.
- Prices. Current prices are shown on our Surf page. You pay at reception before you pick up the equipment.
- Payment. We accept Visa and Mastercard.
- Availability. Equipment is rented on a first-come, first-served basis. Board sizes and models may vary.
4. Sessions
We rent equipment in fixed 2-hour sessions. This keeps our boards available for everyone and keeps prices low.
- One session is 2 hours, counted from the moment you pick up the equipment at reception.
- Whole sessions only. Sessions can't be split. Half sessions, 1.5 sessions or 1-hour rentals are not possible.
- One session, one go. A session runs for 2 hours without a break. If you bring the equipment back early, the session is finished, even if you only used it for 1 hour.
- No saving time. Time you don't use can't be saved, added to another session, or given to someone else.
- Want to surf longer? Book another session. Session packs make extra sessions cheaper.
- Session packs (5 or 10 sessions) can be used any day during your stay, one session at a time, subject to availability. Packs are personal and can't be shared or transferred. Unused sessions are not refunded.
- Bad conditions. If our staff decide the conditions are too dangerous to rent out equipment, you won't lose a session. Pack sessions can be used another day, and unused single sessions can be refunded.
5. Pick-up and Return
- Pick-up is between 09:00 and 17:00 at reception. The last pick-up is at 17:00.
- Check the equipment with us at pick-up. Any existing damage is written down, so you won't be charged for it later.
- Return the equipment to reception within 2 hours of pick-up. Don't leave it in the rack, the shower area or anywhere else. Staff need to check it before your deposit is released.
- Final deadline: 19:00. All equipment must be back at reception by 19:00, no matter when you picked it up. Our surf room closes at 19:00 and the equipment must be locked away for the night.
- Late returns cost €5 for every started 30 minutes past your return time. For example, 40 minutes late costs €10. This is because late returns stop other guests from getting their session.
- Running late? Contact us by WhatsApp or come to reception as soon as possible.
- Not returned by 19:00 and no contact from you: the equipment is treated as lost (see section 7).
6. Deposit
We take a deposit so that we can cover damage, loss, theft or late fees.
- Amount: €150 for soft-tops (with or without a wetsuit), or €300 for hardboards (with or without a wetsuit). For a wetsuit rented on its own, the deposit is €50.
- How: as a temporary hold on your credit or debit card (Visa or Mastercard). No money is taken unless there is a charge.
- A new hold for every session. If you use a session pack, we place a new hold each time you pick up equipment and release it when you return it.
- Released as soon as the equipment is back on time and in the same condition as when you picked it up. Your bank may take a few days to show the hold as released.
- Charges for late return, damage, loss or theft are taken from the deposit. If they cost more than the deposit, you agree to pay the difference.
7. Damage, Loss and Theft
You are responsible for the equipment from the moment you pick it up until it is checked back in at reception. By renting, you agree to pay the following costs:
| Damage or loss | Cost |
|---|---|
| Late return | €5 per started 30 minutes |
| Minor damage (dings, scratches, small cracks) | €10 – €50, depending on the repair |
| Lost fin or leash | €20 |
| Snapped or seriously damaged board | Full replacement cost, up to €500 |
| Lost, stolen or unreturned board | Full replacement cost, up to €500 |
| Lost, stolen or unreturned wetsuit | Full replacement cost |
- Never leave equipment unattended on the beach, in a car, at a café or anywhere else. Equipment left behind counts as lost, even if you planned to come back for it.
- Theft must be reported to us straight away. You are still responsible for the cost, so keep the equipment with you at all times.
- Tell us about damage when you return the equipment. Normal wear from careful use is not charged.
- Don't repair anything yourself. Bad repairs can make the damage worse and cost more.
8. Looking After the Equipment
- Use it only for surfing at Las Canteras and nearby beaches. Don't take it to other islands or use it for anything else.
- Don't lend it to anyone else. Only the person who rented it may use it.
- Keep it out of the sun. Don't leave boards or wetsuits in direct sunlight for long. Heat damages boards (delamination) and wetsuits.
- Carry the board, don't drag it. Dragging boards over sand, rocks or pavement damages them.
- Rinse off the sand in the outside shower before you enter the hostel. No sandy equipment inside, please.
9. Safety in the Water
The ocean can change quickly. These rules help keep you and other surfers safe:
- Check the conditions before you go out: weather, wind, tide and currents. If you're unsure, ask our staff.
- Surf within your ability. Beginners should stay in small waves and away from crowded areas and rocks.
- Always wear the leash attached to your ankle, so the board doesn't hit other people.
- Respect the line-up. Don't drop in on other surfers, and give way to the surfer closest to the peak.
- Follow lifeguards and beach flags. Never surf when a red flag is up.
- Never surf alone in difficult conditions, and let someone know when you go out.
10. Risks and Liability
Surfing is a physical sport with real risks, even for experienced surfers. These include waves, currents, rocks and reef, marine life, other surfers, changing weather, and being hit by your own or someone else's board or fin. These risks can cause injury, and in rare cases serious injury or death.
- You take part voluntarily and accept these risks.
- You use the equipment at your own risk and are responsible for any injury or damage you cause to other people or their property.
- We check our equipment regularly, but you must check it yourself before use and tell us straight away if anything seems wrong.
- We are not liable for injury, loss or damage that happens while you use the equipment, except where the law does not allow us to exclude this, for example in cases of our own negligence.
- We are not responsible for personal belongings you bring to the beach.
- Nothing in these terms affects your rights as a consumer under Spanish and EU law.
11. Renters Under 18
- Renters under 18 can only rent if a parent or legal guardian accepts these terms on their behalf, at reception, and shows their own photo ID.
- The parent or guardian accepts all of these terms and is responsible for the equipment, the minor's safety and any charges.
- We recommend that young or inexperienced surfers take a surf class instead of renting alone.
12. Your Personal Data
Champsaur Sicilia S.L. is responsible for the personal data you give us when you rent, such as your name, ID number, contact details and card details for the deposit.
- We use your data only to manage your booking, rental, deposit and any charges, and to contact you or your emergency contact if needed.
- We don't share it with anyone else, unless the law requires it.
- We keep it only as long as needed for these purposes and our legal obligations.
- You can ask to see, correct or delete your data at any time by emailing hostel@kyosurf.es. You also have the right to complain to the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD).
13. Other Terms
- Changes. We may update these terms from time to time. The version on this page when you rent is the one that applies.
- Breaking the rules. If you break these terms, we may end your rental straight away and refuse future rentals, without a refund.
- Law. These terms are governed by Spanish law.
- Questions or complaints. Contact us at reception or by email at hostel@kyosurf.es. Official complaint forms (hojas de reclamaciones) are available at reception.
14. Accepting These Terms
By ticking the box on our booking form, or by accepting these terms at reception, you confirm that:
- you are 18 or older, or a parent or guardian has accepted these terms for you;
- you are a confident swimmer and in good health;
- you have read and understood these terms; and
- you agree to follow them and to pay any charges described above.
Thank you for respecting the rules. Have a great session!
